A bit about Kington

Kington is just over 20 miles to the north west of Hereford, in the Marches, on the River Arrow and nestled under Hergest Ridge. With a number of long-distance footpaths around the town, beautiful panoramic views, open countryside and surrounding hills, Kington can honestly claim to be a walker's paradise. There is a 3 star hotel, more than 50 registered bed and breakfasts and a number of pubs and eateries so the necessities of life for the visitor are all well taken care of.

Kington's 3 shopping streets boasts a range of local shops including 2 butchers selling locally sourced meat, a baker, a fish monger, an antiquarian bookshop, a handful of independent shops (but no "High Street names") and 2 banks and a post office with friendly staff. At the end of Kington High Street is the red brick Market Hall with its clock tower built to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887. Behind the Market Hall sits the Kington Museum, the open timbered Coach House and the Victorian built primary school. On the hill overlooking Kington is St. Mary's Church parts of which date back to Norman times.

Kington has a great small town community, highlights of which include the annual Kington Festival where the streets are closed for a wheelbarrow race (as depicted in a Radio 4 play!) plus a carnival and gala day. The annual food festival held at the beginning of December is always a great day showcasing local produce, and with an active operatic society performing pantomimes and Gilbert and Sullivan on a regular basis, the successful Kington Choral Society's regular concerts and a host of local bands performing around the town, there is always something going on in Kington.

The famous Hergest Croft Gardens can be found on the north west edge of Kington, a great day out where you can enjoy two national collections of trees and naturally landscaped gardens. The Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre at Kingswood, just outside Kington on the opposite end is well worth a visit.

The town of Kington has an attractive riverside recreation ground which houses the town's cricket club (winners of the National Village Cricket Cup at Lords in 1993) and is the venue for many local outdoor events including the annual gala days and vintage rally. Kington Golf Club's 18-hole course on Bradnor Hill is said to be the highest in England, almost 400 metres above sea level.
